What is theory? / Deductive versus Inductive Reasoning

What is a Theory?

A scientific theory is a set of interconnected statments.

Theory contains assumptions (those things being accepted without being tested).

Theories should be logically sound, that is, internally consistent; empirically sound, that is, not contradicted by scientific observations; clear; testable; parsimonious; and should also cover a reasonably large area of science and intergrate previous research. Further, theories should rely on as few constructs, propositions, and the like as possible.
